General Conference: Sister Beck's talk

Ok...I'm interested in hearing what everyone thinks of this lady's outlook on Sister Beck's talk in General Conference yesterday. Personally, I did feel a little inadequate when listening, but I knew it was not meant to make us feel bad about ourselves. Check out the blog post from mormon mommy wars and then let me know what you think.

It's probably not the perfect place to comment about this but...by the way...I loved conference yesterday! Even Sister Beck's talk. President Eyering's talk about journals was inspiring. I loved how he said he had heard the words, "I'm not giving you these experiences for yourself. Write them down.". I need to remember to think: Have I seen the hand of God reaching out to touch me, my children or family today? Writing my spiritual experiences down will bless my children and family.

Hi there
I really enjoyed Sister Beck's talk. I watched all 4 sessions and enjoyed and needed to hear a few of them but sister Beck's was the one I enjoyed the most. There is a lot the Lord requires of us in these times when raising our children. It is a scarey world out there that is just going to be harder and harder. So we need to step it up when teaching and raising our children so they will be able to withstand the evil out there.

I totally agree Gretta. The talks we hear in conference aren't just from the people who are speaking the words...they are communication from the Lord through the speakers. All talks are for our good and for our spiritual welfare. They aren't meant to make us feel badly about ourselves. I loved conference yesterday.

I would never want to criticize a general authority of the Church, but I will say that she stressed me out- especially at the RS broadcast. Her General Conference talk was very much the same message.
I feel inadequate, but I'm sure she said those things because they needed to be said. She's the one that needed to say it too. Can you imagine the backlash (out in the world)if these talks were given by a man?
Guess it's time to rise to the challenge and do what we know we should be doing- and with an attitude that we can be proud of what we contribute to the world as women.
I was thinking, if any of my kids ever strayed from the gospel I would feel so much guilt if I hadn't done everything I could have done to bring them up right. Family prayers, scripture study, quality Family Home Evenings, keeping the Sabbath day holy, living my own life as an example, etc. etc. etc. Not always easy, but so worth it.

Oh, poor Sister Beck. I bet she had no idea her words would have that kind of negative influence on so many women. Either she didn't intend that and feels REALLY bad right now or she did and we all need to SERIOUSLY repent and improve. Maybe a little of both?

How long did you want my comment to be? :)

When Dan and I first married we did not have children...in fact, we didn't have one for 4 years. Part of that was our own decision, part of it was due to other factors. Dan's mom didn't like this.

I am a SAHM, but don't have a house that looks like it was decorated by Martha Stewart, catered by Rachel Ray, and cleaned by Merry Maids. However, I do believe that there is a standard I'm trying to reach for, and I know from experience that an orderly (not perfect!) home does leave our family free to enjoy each other and the Spirit.

Homemaking skills are practical and necessary but don't replace other knowledge gained while on this earth.

Doing less (to allow for more family time) is important. But if I never do anything for myself I'll lose the only thing that's mine - my mind! We're already so busy with church callings, work, family, life, that the thought of having school-age children with extra-curricular activities is frightening! Will I have learned how to create more time in a day by then?

Basically I believe Sis. Beck was trying to remind LDS women of the great responsibility and blessings that are ours as members of the church and parents of so many special spirits. I don't think she meant to cause anyone pain or pass judgement on any of us who are all trying to do our best.

And, I know I'm on the internet right now, but I realize that this can be a serious time-sucker for me. It's easy for me to spend too much time on this that could be spent on, well, anything else. That's actually the first thought I had after listening to her talk.

Thanks for your blog, Leanne - it's a wondeful read!
